Let’s learn from Google – Data Center Cooling/Power Optimization Techniques

The Internet search engine giant Google handles an enormous amount data, on a daily basis. So, it’s not surprising to know that Google owns and operates many large and small data centers across the world. But what is surprising, is their sharing of technical details on how they optimized the cooling/power utilized by their data centers.

Data center cooling/power optimization is not a priority for many companies. But shouldn’t it be? Not only it makes the world a lot greener by reducing the carbon footprint, but it also results in a substantial reduction of operating costs, on the long term.

Google has released a 10 page guide on the energy saving techniques followed by them to achieve a PUE (Power Usage Efficiency/Effectiveness) of 1.5/1.6 from a higher ratio of 2.4 measured earlier at one of their data centers. Download the case study from this page and read it when you have time. You can be rest assured that this document is not a marketing copy, unlike the whitest white papers released by some vendors 🙂

The efforts taken by a customer to educate and encourage others, needs to be appreciated. Why do the IT departments of large companies not provide similar information learned by them while building large data centers? It will not only be useful to others, but it will add up to the PR efforts and good karma of the company involved.
