Welcome to another edition of bi-weekly computer networking/IT industry updates (22 Oct – Nov 04, 2012). In this edition let us look at some new product releases, news and articles published by prominent IT/Computer Networking vendors.
#1. Motorola introduces HC1, a headset mobile computer – HC1 is a wearable headset mobile computer that will allow you to refer documents, diagrams and anything else stored in the computer, without having to actually carry a heavy laptop/tablet around. This might be useful to mobile industry professionals who need to work with both their hands and at the same time need to refer to something on their computer. #2. Allied Telesis introduces SwitchBlade x8112 Layer 3+ Core Networking Chassis – AT-SBx8112 Switches run in the newly introduced x8112 Networking Chassis, by Allied Telesis. #4. EMC to acquire Silver Tail Systems – EMC will shortly acquire web-fraud detection (privately held) company called Silver Tail Systems. Silver Tail Systems specializes in behavioral analysis and web-session intelligence solutions. This acquisition will help bank/retail customers thwart cyber attacks.
#5. Lenovo forms a new enterprise product group – Lenovo’s new enterprise product group will focus on server, storage, networking and software solutions for SMB/large enterprises. Read more…

Microsoft announces Apache-Hadoop compatible solutions for Windows Server and Windows Azure – Microsoft has announced the previews of Microsoft HDInsight for Windows and Microsoft HDInsight service for Windows Azure. These initiatives are supposed to simplify the deployment of Apache-Hadoop based Big Data solutions in the enterprise and cloud. Polycom introduces VVX 600 & VVX Camera for executive desktop video conferencing – Polycom has introduced the VVX 600 touch-screen based business media phone & VVX Camera that enables quick face to face video conference sessions for business executives. #8. eBay to generate electricity for its data center in Utah, primarily through fuel cells (with grid back up) – Data centers generating their own energy using renewable sources/otherwise is not new, but eBay’s decision to generate its primary electricity using fuel cells and retain the electrical grid as a backup is innovative thinking. Interestingly, this data center does not have any UPS backup and its associated costs. Read more…

Linaro’s Linux on ARM project gets new supporters – Many companies including Facebook, Red Hat and Hp have joined the Linux on ARM project (by Linaro) in order to develop Linux OS and Software for the upcoming ARM-based servers.
